Sophie Goughmakes sculptural work that is influenced by her interest in material culture and the physical exploration of space. By researching urban and rural environments, she examines forms and materials found within the interstices of built and natural landscapes through the making of drawings, installations and objects.

Sophie graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design (L.S.A.D) in 2016 with a first class honors BA in Sculpture and Combined Media. Since then she has exhibited internationally in Dada Post Berlin, Gallery Port Reykjavik, Gallery Unnamed New York, and the H.K.U.University of the Arts Utrecht. She has completed residencies with the National Sculpture Factory in Cork, Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen, County Cork and Dada Post, Berlin. She  interned with Ireland at Venice 2015 for the Venice Biennale and EVA: International in 2016.

Recently,Sophie was awarded a Visual Artist’s Bursary Award by the Arts Council of Ireland. She completed her first public art commission Brí, in September at the Hive Building in Sandyford Business Park, Dublin. Since October 2019 she has been working as an assistant lecturer of sculpture in Limerick School of Art and Design. Other recent projects include a sculptural installation as part of The Boundaries Between Us Endure, 2019 written and conceived by Peter Power for the Cork Midsummer Festival Midwinter Event and Impossible Spaces, 2019 a solo exhibition of drawings in Soma, Cork.

Her practice is largely influenced by her time spent living and working in the contrasting sites of west Cork, Dublin and New York, often engaging in the production of paradoxical entities oscillating between the suggestions of the architectural and the geologic, the ephemeral and the permanent. The material and formal research is led by encounters rooted in two predominant sites; one being her surrounding environment at the time and the other, her studio.  This frequently results in a hybridized practice of collecting and reconfiguring respectively, whereby the daily ritual of walking and slow looking becomes the praxis from which the raw materials are rediscovered. This practice can often lead to a new fusion of space and matter through extensive periods of research in which she seeks to phenomenologically co -exist with the objects in the shared space of her studio.
